The most beautiful baroque city in Switzerland

Solothurn is a town, and the capital of the canton of Solothurn in northwestern Switzerland. It is located in the north-west of Switzerland on the banks of the Aare and on the foot of the Weissenstein Jura mountains. The official language of Solothurn is German, but the main spoken language is the local variant of the Alemannic Swiss German dialect.

The city is small, so it is easy to get around by foot, and the public transportation options are great.

You can see the sustainable trends like organic and unpackaged shops, most regional products’ tasty and insider tips with the conscious enjoyment. Between the beautiful historic monuments, the patrician buildings and the sturdy fortifications, the traffic-free Old Town is a pleasant place to wander, with lots of small shops and inns. You will generally find smaller specialty shops in the older parts of town with larger stores and shopping centres on the outskirts and in newer parts of the city.

A little outside the town is the romantic Verena gorge with its chapel and hermitage, a popular destination for walkers. Hikers and cyclists will find an extensive network of footpaths and 600 km of cycle tracks in the surrounding area and along the Aare.

Solothurn has many regional specialities, namely the “Solothurn cake”, which is made with hazelnut meringue and crème filling.

Its location on the river makes it perfect for a variety of outdoor activities, including my personal favourite – sitting in the sunshine on the terrace of a riverside café enjoying a slice of Solothurner Torte.

Solothurner Film Days (DE) is an important annual film festival and the Solothurn Carnival is always very lively.
